http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT5/intl/en/features.html

Sounds like a Google toolbar "highlight your search terms" feature. This link explains the features of the Google toolbar and instructs how to enable/disable the features on the Learn more tab.

That makes sense, but the problem is that it tells me to click on the "wrench" icon, and there's no darned wrench icon. No icon at all to click on for disinstalling.

try a right-click (option-click on Mac), should pop up a window with menu items/choices.

I know, it should, but it doesn't. Just things like "lock toolbar" and "status bar" and so on, all of which I've tried to no avail.

I've done various clicking and reclicking and enabling/disenabling things (without knowing what I'm doing), and restarted various times, and it's not popping up this very second. But that's been happening for a while now. It'll seem to be gone, and then it shows its ugly face again. I hope whoever invented it did not get a raise.

edit: It's baaaaaack. It helpfully let me know that there is a "but" in "ContriBUTions" at the top of the page. And UU's post elsewhere. But I DON'T WANT TO KNOW. Make it stop!!!

If it's Google toolbar related, try removing the program entirely (control panel -> add or remove programs) and see if that removes the nemesis, you can always re-load the toolbar and customize the features to your preference.

If you respect your privacy on the internet you might have a look at the following search engine, no tracking! http://duckduckgo.com/

If Microsoft is big brother, then Google is bigger brother!

a) select this, using FireFox menu on top: View > Tollbars
- mine is "only checked" for Menu Bar, Navigation Toolbar, and Tabs on Top
- try using Customize Toolbar

b) select this, using FireFox menu on top: View > Add-ons
- you can manage your Add-ons here

c) last ditch effort, remove Firefox s/w from your computer
- access your Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
- remove Firefox s/w, close the Control Panel
- then reinstall Firefox s/w on your computer
